Search Search the Bible, Doctrinal , or Spiritual Works: The English Bible (i.e., the Douay-Rheims version) and all the works found in the Veritas Section except for the saint notes can be searched. The Searchable is accessed by selecting the first row of the Veritas table which is labeled "Search". Select the type of Search. The proceed to search with the usual iPhone search interface commands.
Search Syntax Search features include Boolean AND, Boolean OR, and quoted expressions. All searches are case-insensitive and whole-word. Search syntax is best explained by the examples below, which pertain to the Bible: Faith Hope -> Will give search results only for those Biblical verses which contain both “faith” and “hope”. Hence the searches default to Boolean AND. Faith or Hope -> Will give results for those verses which contain either faith or hope. Hence searches require “OR” if they are meant to be Boolean OR. (Note that you can’t search for the whole world “or”. This is intentional since the benefits from searching for the common word “or” does not outweigh the intuitive simplicity of simply typing “or” to designate the corresponding Boolean condition. It does’t matter if the keyword OR is capitalized or not.) "faithful servant" -> Will give results only when the words are consecutive. For example, the Bible contains this hit in verses Sirach 33:31, Mt 25:21, and Mat 25:23. "faithful servant" good -> Repeating the search with the additional word good now only gives the two verses from Matthew which include the statement, “Well done, good and faithful servant, because thou…”
Context of Searches The Bible is searched by verses as described in the examples above. So the boolean conditions required for a search result must be found in the individual verse (i.e., as opposed to a chapter.) The catechisms are searched by questions and the corresponding answer. The Search Results Table then displays either the whole verse (if the Bible is searched) or the question, but not the answer (if a catechism is searched). Other Documents are searched by the paragraph.
In the example above, there are 208 instances of "hope" in the Douay-Rheims Bible and in the Catechism of Christine Doctrine. The indexes on the right of the table are linked to sections that have at least one search result. We can see that the "Hi stoical (Books)" section of the Old Testament has 8 verses containing the word "hope". It is often practical to search for a term in both the Bible and one or more of the catechisms; iPieta provides this feature. The Search Results Table is indexed so you can quickly check out the results that correspond to the relevant sections of the Bible and catechism(s) by clicking on the index on the right side of the table. More Information Touching a specific search result will access more information. This is handled differently for the Bible, the Q & A Catechisms, and the other spiritual works. An example for the Bible is shown below: Touch the Bible search result to display the verse in the context of a few preceding and following verses determined by the default in Settings. The Search Term(s) will be in bold so they can be readily distinguished from the rest of the text. The Previous, Next, and Other buttons are displayed. The Previous and Next button will load up the previous or next Search Result (not chapter!) in context. The Other button will load up the whole chapter that the verse is contained in. Each Search Term in the chapter is in bold. You can even navigate to previous or following chapters (not search results!) with the Previous or Next buttons. All Search Terms will continue to be displayed in bold. (Even though the searches are Whole Word, the search terms in context or in chapter are displayed in bold even if it is part of a word.)
Examples for a Q & A Catechism and for the Summa are shown below:
As seen above, touching a catechism search result displays the question and the answer with the usual Dual-Display mode colors scheme and with the search terms in bold. The Next and Previous buttons will access the previous and following search results (not catechism chapters!) in this context. Touching the Other button will display the entire chapter. The search terms are in bold; the Previous and Next buttons access the corresponding chapters which will also display these search terms in bold. Yet More Information In the example below, the entire chapter of Tobit was loaded by pressing the Other arrow (pointing to the right) which is now disabled. (This action could be effected by a horizontal swipe originating within 75 pixels of the left edge.) Similar behavior exists for the catechisms and spiritual works. The entire chapter is loaded. The up / down arrows (or corresponding swipes) now give access to the other chapters. The search terms continue to be displayed in bold.
Limitations The search engine’s main limitation is not having partial word searches. For example, it would be great to have an option by which “confess” would match both the word “confess” and the word “confession”. However, you can work around this limitation by simply using the OR keyword. |
